Abstract: This study aims to understand the physiology and biochemistry of seeds when exposed to environmental stressors and to identify potential mitigation strategies. Seeds are fundamental to plant life and play a crucial role in the production of food and essential materials. Exposure to environmental stressors poses a significant threat to seeds, affecting their survival and reproductive capacity. In agricultural regions of Brazil with high salinity due to industrial and mining activities, there is a need for seeds tolerant to these stressors. The study conducted a systematic literature review from 2013 to 2023, focusing on technical and scientific articles on seeds and environmental stressors. The results highlight the impacts of stressors on seed metabolism, including changes in embryo axis growth and the endosperm layer, as well as modifications in cell membrane permeability and oxidative stress. The study also emphasizes the importance of proper water management, with water deficiency being a limiting factor for the germination of non-dormant seeds.
