Abstract: Rheumatic fever has a great impact on the health and quality of life of affected individuals. Thus, this review aimed to evaluate in the literature the importance of treatment, prevention and the complications that develop after an infection by the group A Beta-hemolytic Streptococcus bacteria that was not treated or submitted to an unsatisfactory treatment. Early detection and treatment of streptococcal infection is essential for a better prognosis, as well as the use of prophylactic treatments in people at high risk of developing the disease, are important strategies to prevent rheumatic fever. This disease can affect the heart, joints, skin and brain, and can lead to serious complications, such as permanent damage to the heart valves. The databases used were BVS and PubMed. The search for articles considered the descriptors “rheumatic fever”, “prevention” and “treatment”, using the Boolean “AND”. Where articles published in the last 10 years (2013-2023) were included, of the type controlled clinical study and observational study, where 28 articles were selected. The articles in general showed that although the disease has a well-defined pathophysiology and treatment, the disease still has a high rate of recurrence, since the population has little power to recognize the characteristics of the disease at a global level, which makes it underestimated and neglected, and poor adherence to medication measures due to their long periodicity and the inconvenience caused.
