This devotion reached the region of the north coast of São Paulo with the construction of the first chapel dedicated to Santo Antônio, which gave rise to Vila de Caraguatatuba. This village belonging to the district of São Sebastião, was formed in 1835, by two streets and an alley, with a few hundred inhabitants, approximately 2,917 inhabitants and a charming building - the Matriz de Santo Antônio. Thanks to the action of the inhabitants, the devotion to Santo Antônio, developed the city. After a natural disaster, residents reaffirm their devotion to the patron saint, and understand that the city is blessed by the saint. There is one of the Serra do Mar hills, 373 meters high, known as Morro de Santo Antônio, the climb is about 2.5 km and the walk takes about 40 minutes. There, a 13-meter-high statue of the Saint was installed, from where you have a panoramic view of the city. And Saint Anthony facing the city protects its devotees. The Mother Church of São Antônio presented the requirements to be elevated to Sanctuary, as it presented space for pilgrimage, the relic of the Saint, recorded miracles, religious festival of great proportion, a tourist place, these elements together made the Bishop send official letters, in 2014, requesting the declaration of the Matrix to the Sanctuary, formalized in 2019.
