Abstract: Introduction: Volunteer work has received great notoriety in the media, as it is a growing form of social contribution. In the 2018 IBGE census, 7.7% million declared volunteering. In this context, motivation is a determining factor for the maintenance or evasion of volunteers in volunteer projects. Objective: To identify the motivational factors that drive the practice of continuous volunteering, as well as to map the sociodemographic characteristics of volunteers and investigate the presence of factors that demotivate the practice of volunteering, increasing the chances of evasion. Materials and Method: Cross-sectional and qualitative research, carried out at the headquarters of the Association in question, in which ten volunteers who met the research eligibility criteria were interviewed. Results: The average age of the sample was 35.4 years, 80% were women, 70% declared themselves white and 60% reported that their marital status was single. The categories associated with motivation identified by the participants' reports were: motivational factors related to altruism and concern for others; factors related to the feeling of obligation and/or retribution; factors related to personal satisfaction; and factors that impact, increasing the demotivation of volunteers. Conclusions: There are several factors that impact the motivation to practice volunteer work, and these can act to increase or decrease motivation. Therefore, it is essential that Associations and NGOs identify such factors.
