Abstract: This is a bibliographic review study with the objective of analyzing publications that address stress among nurses and its causes. The research encompassed articles in Portuguese and English, accessed from the Lilacs, Scielo, and Pubmed databases, as well as relevant books on the subject from 2013 to 2023. The results of the article analysis revealed that the term 'stress' is associated with feelings of fatigue, difficulty, frustration, and demotivation, constituting a constant presence in nurses' daily lives. Among the stressors highlighted in the research are: excessive demands, challenges in interpersonal relationships (including dealing with different opinions within the team and acting as a mediator), workload overload evidenced by the responsibility to cover more than one sector, as well as qualitative demands related to the complexity of human interactions. Other factors include lack of professional support, bureaucratic tasks, personnel management, staff shortages, and deficiencies in communication and service understanding, as well as challenges associated with work shifts and specific sectors of activity. The articles also point out some mechanisms that nurses can adopt to minimize stress sources, such as strengthening relationships with the multiprofessional team, obtaining administrative support, adjusting workload division according to the number of available professionals, and implementing worker health care programs.
