• Abstract: Introduction: Prenatal care is one of the essential pillars of maternal and child health. It plays a key role in promoting a healthy pregnancy, contributing to the proper development of the baby and preventing health risks for both the mother and the newborn. Objective: This study aims to analyze the factors contributing to inadequate prenatal care and discuss their effects on the health of pregnant women and newborns. Method: This is an integrative literature review, following the PRISMA protocol, investigating the factors behind inadequate prenatal care and their impacts on the maternal-infant binomial. The search was conducted in March 2025, covering publications from 2023 to 2024, in Portuguese, English, and Spanish. The databases consulted were PubMed, CINAHL, Scopus, LILACS, BDEnf, and SciELO. Results: Based on the selected studies, the main factors associated with inadequate prenatal care include low education, insufficient income, limited access to healthcare services, and lack of connection with the primary care team. Low adherence to consultations and exams compromises pregnancy monitoring. A higher incidence of obstetric complications, premature births, and low birth weight was observed. Greater social vulnerability was also evident among the affected pregnant women. Conclusion: Inadequate prenatal care is directly related to negative outcomes for both mother and baby. Investing in public policies that promote access, continuity of care, and quality prenatal services is essential.
