Abstract: INTRODUCTION: Sleep is an essential physiological process, regulated by intrinsic and extrinsic factors that influence the number of hours slept and the quality of sleep. In this sense, these agents can cause an imbalance in the individual's sleep-wake cycle and lead to a greater propensity for the development of sleep disorders, with insomnia being the main representative of these. Therefore, this study aimed to analyze the factors associated with sleep quality. METHODOLOGY: This is a documentary study, with a qualitative and descriptive approach, developed from the analysis of 18 scientific publications and technical documents, found in the SciELO and PubMed databases, with a time filter of 2019-2025, available in English, Portuguese and Spanish, available in full for consultation. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: The research showed that sleep duration varies according to age and physiological conditions, being longer in the neonatal period and progressively reduced throughout life, with its lowest quantitative and qualitative value in old age. Meanwhile, behavioral, environmental, and sociocultural factors exert a significant influence on the sleep-wake cycle, contributing to an increase in sleep disorders in the population throughout life. Among the main impacts, sleep deprivation and poor sleep quality are associated with cognitive impairment, metabolic and hormonal changes, as well as a higher risk of cardiovascular diseases and mental health disorders. It was also found that sleep quality is more relevant than its quantity as a health marker, and instruments such as the PSQI and the Epworth Sleepiness Scale are important tools for the clinical screening of disorders. In this context, the importance of sleep hygiene as a health promotion strategy is also highlighted, encompassing practices that favor an environment and routine conducive to rest. FINAL CONSIDERATIONS: It is clear that a large part of the studied population does not get the recommended hours of rest, a factor that denotes concern due to the increased incidence of sleep disorders. Furthermore, it is evident that educational and preventative interventions are fundamental for improving sleep quality and, consequently, for promoting well-being and overall health.
