Abstract: Cancer-related fatigue has been one of the main side effects reported by children and young patients, especially those undergoing chemotherapy. Objective: To evaluate the self-reported cancer-related fatigue of children and adolescents during cancer treatment, comparing with the same age group of healthy population and cancer patients from developed countries. Methods: The sample consisted of 25 patients undergoing cancer treatment at a public hospital in Florianópolis-SC, 14 of whom were male. To assess fatigue, the PedsQlTM Multidimensional Fatigue Scale was used. This scale consists of three subscales: Fatigue in general, Fatigue and sleep and Mental fatigue. All items use a Likert-type scale and raw scores were transformed into scales from 0 to 100, with 0=100, 1=75, 2=50, 3=25, 4=0, with higher scores indicating less symptoms of fatigue. The t-test was used for a sample, the data come from a normal distribution and were compared with data from healthy children and oncology by Varni et al. (2002). Results: The average for Tiredness in general in the sample was 64.50±17.05, for sleep it was 57.00±18.96 and for mental 60.50±23.07, and the total scale was 60.66±17.87. There was a significant difference in the 3 subscales and total, when compared with the two Varni groups, with p<0.001; p<0.001 and p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively for each domain with “healthy” and p=0.001, p=0.006, p=0.011 and p<0.001, respectively, compared to the oncological population of Varni. Conclusion: The results indicate that children and adolescents undergoing treatment feel fatigued sometimes, often or almost always, and more intensely, when compared to healthy and oncologists residents in developed countries.
