Abstract: Abstract— Summary— Mental health is defined as the state of well-being in which individuals can carry out their activities normally, utilizing their capacities to perform productive and fruitful work for the benefit of the community. Therefore, it is not merely the absence of afflictions or diseases. Since the 1970s, mental health has been considered a public health issue due to the increase in cases worldwide. For this reason, states have decided to implement interdisciplinary and multisectoral actions to prevent the rise in cases among the population. Adolescence is a crucial stage in human development; it represents a unique transition between childhood and adulthood, during which profound physical changes occur, such as growth and neuroendocrine development, as well as psychological and social changes. Objective: To identify factors related to depression in upper secondary school students. Methodology: Cross-sectional, observational, and descriptive study. Teachers, school administrators, and parents were informed about the study's objective, and informed consent was obtained, authorizing the participation of the students. Results: Depressive symptoms, measured through the Birleson scale, indicated that 21.9% of the students show these symptoms. Self-esteem, evaluated with the Rosenberg scale, showed that 17.6% of the students have low self-esteem. Conclusions: The observed prevalence is above the national average.
