Abstract: The extraction of non-timber forest products (NTFP) and the commercialization of phytocrafts are considered a profitable option for many families, in addition to strengthening biocultural heritage. In this context, lianas or vines have high potential for use in the handicraft production chain in many traditional communities. Therefore, this literature review sought to analyze information about ethnobotanical studies regarding the potential use of vines in the phytocrafts production chain. We searched for works in the Google Scholar and Scielo databases, considering articles, book chapters, monographs (course conclusion works, theses and dissertations) and technical circulars, published between 2000 and 2020 in Portuguese and English. There is a greater concentration of studies carried out in the North region. There was a considerable increase in work in 2013. In terms of botanical diversity, the Araceae family stands out with greater species richness, with the plant parts used in the production of handicrafts being roots and stems. Some studies have recorded overexploitation of many species due to predatory collection, compromising the sustainability of the artisanal sector and the populations of these species. Devaluation of artisanal activity is described, highlighting the lack of structural organization and standardization of prices, which means that the majority of profits go to wholesalers or middlemen. Therefore, government regulations and incentives to subsidize good practices in sustainable NTFP exploitation are important to reduce such impacts. Despite the low added value to the activity, handicrafts constitute a potential subsistence resource for many local families.
