Abstract: Postpartum depression (PPD) is defined as the emergence of mood-altering symptoms during pregnancy or within four to six weeks after childbirth. It has been observed that mothers with PPD are less likely to engage in breastfeeding. This review aims to analyze the correlation between PPD and breastfeeding, as well as to elucidate the key factors associated with both PPD and lactation. The study follows a systematic review methodology in accordance with the PRISMA statement. The search was conducted across databases including MEDLINE, SciELO, SCOPUS, and LILACS. The research was independently conducted by two researchers. Original articles addressing the research objective and published in Portuguese and English were selected, resulting in the inclusion of 23 articles for qualitative analysis.Factors identified regarding the breastfeeding-PPD relationship encompass age, socioeconomic status, maternal and child well-being, cultural aspects, and mental health. Across a significant portion of the studies, higher rates of exclusive breastfeeding discontinuation were noted among infants with mothers displaying PPD symptoms. Additionally, a higher score on the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale showed a strong correlation with early breastfeeding cessation (between 4 to 8 weeks postpartum) and, ultimately, PPD. Conversely, factors such as maternal age, educational attainment, employment, number of children, and infant's gender demonstrated limited significance.
