Abstract: This study examines the impact of pain behaviors and avoidance strategies in patients with chronic pain, with a focus on the contributions of Fordyce's work. A therapeutic approach is proposed, centered on modifying these behaviors, aiming not only for pain relief but also to enhance overall quality of life. The significance of psychology is emphasized in considering the interconnection between psychological factors and bodily processes in patients facing chronic pain. The psychotherapeutic perspective in addressing chronic pain is explored, identifying psychosocial characteristics influencing the transition from acute to persistent pain. Chronic pain is acknowledged as a condition impacting not only physical health but also mental well-being and social relationships, with repercussions across various aspects of daily life. The biopsychosocial approach is underscored as crucial in chronic pain treatment, considering the interplay between cognitive, emotional, and behavioral factors. The pivotal role of psychologists is highlighted in unraveling narratives underlying the pain experience, recognizing it as a process intrinsically linked to the individual within their social context. Psychological strategies in chronic pain management, such as Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), are presented. These approaches seek to modify negative thought patterns, transform the perception of pain, and promote the acceptance of painful sensations, contributing to functional improvement and the reduction of psychological distress. The promotion of acceptance is emphasized as a crucial element in the journey against chronic pain, empowering patients to commit to meaningful values and goals. In conclusion, psychotherapy is recognized as an essential tool to address not only the physical manifestation of pain but also the intricate psychosocial nuances permeating this multifaceted condition.
