Abstract: Existentialism emerged as a philosophical current centered on human experience and the search for meaning. It was initiated by Kierkegaard and developed greatly with Heidegger and Sartre. The current explores the concept that human beings are responsible for their existence and that, in order to live authentically, they must create their own meaning in life. Heidegger identified three essential aspects of human beings: they act, think, relate and are linked to time, transcending their ideals. Sartre complements this by saying that man is initially a “nothing”, but is transformed into a “being-for-itself” through consciousness. The construction of essence occurs through choices, which also generate anguish and responsibility. Existentialism thus places human freedom at the center of the search for meaning. The aim of this study is to present the main characteristics of this philosophical current, presenting the most important philosophers responsible for representing what is known as existentialism. The method adopted was bibliographical research in various scientific databases and books. The conclusion is that existentialist theories have achieved such strength that they have influenced other epistemological fields, such as Psychology, especially in existential and humanist approaches, and Law, in which the Brazilian Federal Constitution itself introduced existentialist aspects by defending the essential right of human beings to exist with their freedom, responsibility and rights.
