Abstract: The understanding of the origins of the peat soils of Itajaí, Santa Catarina, traces back to geological and anthropogenic processes dating approximately 5,000 years ago. This article seeks to establish a correlation between the marine regression and transgression phenomena—responsible for the formation of local peats—and the presence of prehistoric shell mound (sambaqui) peoples who inhabited the region during the same period. Based on recent archaeological evidence, the study discusses the possibility of rudimentary agricultural practices carried out by these populations, including the cultivation and consumption of roots such as cassava (Manihot esculenta). From this historical and edaphic perspective, the article proposes a reflection on the environmental and cultural legacy that has influenced the current quality of cassava cultivated in the “terra preta” areas of the São Roque and Rio Novo (Japanese Colony) communities in Itajaí.
