Abstract: Evading higher education is a growing concern with social and economic impacts. In the Economics course at UEPG, the high dropout rate is a challenge, exacerbated by the imminent General Law of Universities (LGU) that regulates student retention. This study, therefore, aims to characterize the profile of students who abandoned the course between 2013 and 2024, identifying the reasons for evasion from data collected directly from dropouts. The analysis, using descriptive statistics, revealed that the main motivation for evasion is the broken expectations of students regarding the acquired learning, meaning that what is taught does not fully or partially correspond to their expectations after entering university. Other factors, such as the degree of difficulty of the course and the relationship with professors, were also pointed out as relevant. The results indicate that evasion can be influenced by both external factors, such as the quality of high school education and financial conditions, and internal factors, such as engagement with academic activities and the perception of the institution's quality.
