Abstract: School dropout is one of the major challenges faced by the educational system. Historically, it is an old problem that still remains highly relevant today. In the field of professional education, as we will see, studies on this topic are scarce and relatively recent. The institutionalization of Federal Institutes is part of a public policy aimed at mitigating social inequalities, offering new opportunities for civic education and entry into the labor market, and thus enabling individuals’ emancipation. In this regard, through a state-of-the-art review, we seek to address this topic in technical and integrated courses within the federal network of professional education, along a timeline starting from the institutionalization of the Federal Centers for Technological Education, attempting to expose the phenomenon and the causes of dropout. Key indicators were observed, showing that dropout processes occur due to high failure rates in certain subjects, as well as cognitive, personal, and economic factors.
