Abstract: Physicochemical, nutritional, antioxidant and bioactive compound parameters from fruits of two Vaccinium species (V. leucanthum: cahuiche and V. corymbosum: blueberry) were evaluated. The physicochemical results showed statistically significant differences between the color parameters L*, a*, b* for each 1 Dr. José Antonio Sánchez Franco, Académico de la Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México, Camino de Caleros Núm. 11. Both presented characteristics of acid fruits with humidity of 73 ± 0.37 and 86.4 ± 0.14% for cahuiche and blueberry respectively. Cahuiche presented significantly higher values of energy content (78.8 ± 0.73 cal per 100 g of fresh weight (FW)), carbohydrates (24.57 ± 0.14%) and fiber (6.83 ± 0.13%). Antioxidant capacity was significantly higher in cahuiche: 1,035.51±48.83 µmol equivalents of Trolox/100 g FW for the inhibition of the ABTS radical; 1,293.69±28.07 µmol Trolox equivalents/100g FW of DPPH radical inhibition; 1,558.11±5.85 µmol equivalent to Fe2+ for FRAP and 26.66±1.31% inhibition for Fe2+ chelating activity. Cahiche presented a significantly higher concentration of total phenols (1,090.33±15.28 mg gallic acid equivalents/100 g FW). The results suggest that cahuiche consumption represents a potential beneficial contribution to human health and could be considered a fruit with functional properties due to its high fiber content, antioxidant activity, and phenolic compounds compared to blueberries.
