Abstract: This article presents a state-of-the-art literature review on the academic production related to Environmental Education (EE) in formal teaching within Brazilian public schools from 2014 to 2024. The research aimed to inventory and analyze the characteristics and trends of the works produced in this area, using keywords such as "formal environmental education" in databases and repositories of various educational institutions. A total of 14 documents, including scientific articles, dissertations, theses, and books, were selected. The results indicate a growth in academic production, with a notable increase from 2020 onwards. The study found a predominance of scientific articles and a strong concentration of research in the fields of Science and Biology, particularly at the elementary school level. The main gaps identified were the limited exploration of student perception and the scarce attention given to Environmental Education in early childhood education. In contrast, the most frequent research focuses were teaching practices and teacher training. It is concluded that, despite significant progress, EE still faces challenges such as the lack of educational policies to ensure its cross-curricular nature and the need for more research to strengthen its role in shaping conscious and engaged citizens committed to sustainability.
