Abstract: Durable cutting tools make a significant contribution to the economy and speed of machining processes, reducing production downtime for tool changes, allowing higher cutting speeds, and requiring fewer tools. Various methods for improving tools have been studied and developed, with plasma nitriding of high-speed steels being particularly notable. This study aimed to analyze the performance of nitrided high-speed steel end mills under different temperature conditions and with duplex treatment involving TiN deposition in the machining of SAE 1020 steel. Microscopy was used to capture wear images at all machining stages, and the electrical current required by the machining center was measured to evaluate tool performance. Metallography and microhardness testing were employed to study the machined surface. Machining tests were conducted with fixed parameters v c = 20 m/min and a p = 0.5 mm. It was observed that abrasion strongly influenced tool wear. The end mill nitrided at 450°C exhibited the best performance compared to those nitrided at 350°C and 400°C, showing lower electrical current values and a higher number of passes, indicating greater material removal. However, the end mill with duplex treatment did not show satisfactory performance compared to the nitrided ones. Higher microhardness values were found in the work-hardened regions of the machined surface compared to the center of the workpiece.
