Abstract: This is an experience report, carried out from August to September 2022, with the objective of presenting a didactic sequence involving the topic “oxides and pollution” based on pedagogical actions that are completed with a case study. The study setting was a full-time private school located in the west zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The observations described in this report were carried out during Chemistry classes in 8 classes in the 2nd year of high school, made up of up to 17 students. Five sequential classes were held: 1) experimental activity (oxide formation); 2) guidance for preparing study material collectively on the topic “oxides and pollution”; 3) lecture (general characteristics of oxides); 4) oral presentation, discussion and deepening of the proposed topic based on the material produced collectively by each class; 5) case study. The approach to the theme included principles of scientific education with a CTS/CTSA focus, related to Freire's ideals. The results showed that the proposed sequence contributed to the students, critically, suggesting a set of solutions for the fictitious problem situation presented in the case study. The chain of activities was intended to help students reflect on the relationship between the problems presented and the specific contents of Chemistry based on the collective construction of knowledge through dialogue and elaboration of arguments throughout the process.
