Abstract: Shyness is a topic little investigated by scholars and receives little attention from families and teachers. If shyness is not identified and addressed, it can harm a person's emotional, social and academic life. This work presents a case study that aimed, through play, to work with a child who demonstrated marked shyness in the classroom, in order to contribute to his emotional development. The method used was qualitative case study research and the data collection instruments were observations, interviews with the mother and teacher and playful meetings in the school playroom with the child. The analysis of data clearly showed significant changes in the child's behavior and development inside and outside of the classroom. It concludes that the "playing" was an instrument capable of helping the girl to express her internal conflicts and in doing so; improve her socialization and communication with friends.
