Abstract: Microalgae are increasingly being used in various fields due to their properties, such as high growth rates, high CO2 absorption capacity, and the production of various high-value-added bioproducts. One of the most cultivated and studied microalgae currently is Chlorella vulgaris, as it has high growth rates and can be cultivated in various types of environments, producing large quantities of proteins and carbohydrates. Therefore, the objective of this work was to evaluate the solvent extraction process of total carbohydrates from the microalga Chlorella vulgaris. The solvents used were hexane and the ionic liquid 2-hydroxyethanolamine acetate (2-HEAA). Nine experiments were conducted under specific conditions; all were cultivated for 28 days and showed the end of the exponential phase on day 14. With the aid of analyses and techniques, it was possible to determine the growth kinetics, the acid hydrolysis for obtaining carbohydrates, and the carbohydrate extraction using hexane and ionic liquid solvents in the experiment that showed the best efficiency in acid hydrolysis. The data indicated that the experiment with a NaNO3 concentration of 1500 mg L-1 and a 16h photoperiod showed the highest productivity with 0.714 g L-1 day-1. However, the experiment with NaNO3 2300 mg L-1 and a 16h photoperiod showed a statistically significant result regarding desirability analysis, presenting an extraction of 37% of the total carbohydrate fraction and 77.4% when extraction was performed using the ionic liquid solvent. The results indicate that the ionic liquid was more efficient in the selective removal of non-structural compounds and in the preservation or relative enrichment of the polysaccharide fraction.
