Abstract: Molding is the technical act of obtaining impression or mold of a structure or surface, which is an essential step for carrying out various procedures in dentistry. It is extremely important to define a diagnosis, plan clinical cases and perform laboratory services for prosthetic services. The model obtained must faithfully reproduce the anatomy of the arches, the teeth and adjacent tissues such as insertion, brakes and mucosa. Therefore, it must be a very well executed procedure and the professional needs to know the existing techniques. Conventional molding is made from the inclusion of some materials, the most used ones being: Alginate and elastomers, molding the patient's arch. With the introduction of digital technologies in dentistry, intraoral scanners can now be used to obtain digital molds. One of them is the digital scanning obtained through the image capture of the intraoral scanner, which brings to the patient comfort, speed when scanning and precision in prosthetic quality, when compared to conventional impression. In this context, the objective of the study is to compare digital scanning with conventional molding. The research is a bibliographic review, with a 10-year time frame, in which the PUBMED, BIREME, SCIELO and LILACS databases were used as a means of research. Digital scanning has numerous advantages when compared to conventional molding, since it allows better communication between professionals, brings more comfort, speed in molding and precision in prosthetic quality to the patient. According to the data collected, it can be concluded that digital scanning has advantages over conventional and is gradually being introduced in the dental environment.
