Abstract: HIV chemoprophylactic strategies currently represent a fundamental tool in controlling new cases. They consist of PrEP (Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis) applied to individuals who are vulnerable to infection and PEP (Post-Exposure Prophylaxis) used after possible exposure to the virus. Highlighting the aspects that characterize these strategies encourages their relevance in society. The search for the works that constituted this article was carried out by inserting the descriptors in national and international databases, namely: The National Library of Medicine (NLM/MEDLINE/PUBMED); Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Sciences (LILACS) and Scientific Electronic Library Online (SciELO). It was found that prophylaxis has made great contributions in the fight against HIV. Furthermore, the development of new pharmaceutical forms and regimens such as on-demand prophylaxis has displayed potential.
