Abstract: Professionals who work in Intensive Care Units (ICU) need a broad range of knowledge about procedures and care for clients in this specific area, as well as their families who develop significant needs when faced with the hospitalization of a loved one in the ICU. . The nurse stands out as a mediator in this context, instituting care strategies for the family members of critical clients with the purpose of providing guidance on the pathology to be faced, minimizing the pain caused by the client's suffering, withdrawal and isolation. This work aims to highlight the main strategies used by nurses towards the families of clients in the ICU, identifying the main needs and challenges faced by this target audience. This is a literature review study carried out in the SCIELO, VHL, LILACS and Google databases, considering the nationality of the articles, publication date and approach to the proposed topic. It was possible to conclude that the literature on the topic is broad and that nurses have a fundamental role in developing strategies for welcoming family members with clients in the ICU, ensuring them safety in the care they receive.
