Abstract: Universities have a fundamental role in promoting research and developing research skills in students. For this, professors must use appropriate methodological strategies; the review of formative research plans and reports is essential to analyze how they are being planned and executed. In this sense, this study aimed to determine how the methodological strategies, used in the execution of formative research projects within the contents of science subjects, contribute to the development of competencies in the students of the Professional School of Environmental Engineering and Forestry (EPIAF) in the 2021 academic semester - II of the National University of Juliaca. The research considered a mixed approach, non-experimental and explanatory scope that includes documentary analysis, for which plans and reports prepared and presented by professors were selected. For the application of the instruments, the sample was non-probabilistic of the typical cases type, consisting of 111 students from the VI to the X cycle and 23 professors, to whom two questionnaires were applied, one to students and the other to professors, regarding the assessment investigative skills and methodological strategies. The results show that, due to their characteristics, Project-Based Learning (PBL) and Research-Based Learning (RBL) are the most used strategies; both contribute significantly to the development of research competencies in students. Likewise, the majority of university students claim to have developed generic and investigative skills. For their part, professors consider it essential to promote research and develop research skills in students; furthermore, they think that it is important to have a solid knowledge of pedagogy.
