Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims to approach the work 'In Praise of Shadows' by J.T. through an aesthetic lens and its connection with the Tanikawa House. Both are highly relevant intellectual figures in their respective fields. Starting with a conceptualization and characterization of the aesthetics of shadows, as presented in Tanizaki's essay, it was possible to observe commonalities with traditional Japanese aesthetic concepts and to perceive how modernity and the Western worldview would bring an end to this aesthetic experience in everyday Japanese life. Amidst the sensation of inherent change in the essay, this research strives to identify the potential for the survival of the aesthetics of shadows even after Japan's modernization. The research proposition was to identify the aesthetics of shadows in the design of the Tanikawa House.
