Abstract: The myth of Eros and Psyche is present in innumerous artistic manifestations that deal with love, especially in literature. Based on the concepts of archetype and individuation proposed by Carl Gustav Jung, we will seek to track different phases of the myth, going through three Portuguese poems written by poets Luís Vaz de Camões, Felipe Moises and Herberto Helder. Then, we will relate the process of Psyche individuation to the projection of the anima archetype found on each poetic persona, in order to show the archetypal influence on poetry. The comparative analysis exercise proposed here is based on Octávio Paz’s assertion that the act of poetry making does not in itself constitute interpretation, but revelation of the human condition. Therefore, we will conclude that the process of individuation is inherent to the poetry making process.
