Abstract: Molecular epidemiology (ME) has established itself as a strategic tool in combating infectious diseases between 2020 and 2025. The integration of technologies in this field has enabled remarkable advances in the understanding of the transmission dynamics of microorganisms. In this context, this study aimed to discuss fundamental concepts, methods, and applications of molecular epidemiology in public health. To this end, a narrative literature review was conducted, exploratory and descriptive in nature; scientific articles published between 2020 and 2025 were selected based on searches conducted in the databases Google Scholar, Web of Science, Scopus, SciELO, and PubMed. The results indicated that the application of EM techniques has strengthened epidemiological surveillance, contributed to the early detection of outbreaks, and supported strategic decisions in public health. By highlighting real case studies, the importance of an interdisciplinary approach and the One Health perspective is emphasized, which are essential to mitigate the impact of infectious diseases and prepare health systems for new global challenges.
