Abstract: Pituitary adenomas, or pituitary neuroendocrine tumors (PitNETs), represent one of the most common intracranial neoplasms, with significant clinical and pathological heterogeneity. This review addresses the general aspects and current epidemiology of these tumors, based on their functionality and the transcription factors that define their cell lineage (PIT1, TPIT, SF1). Functional PitNETs cause hormone hypersecretion syndromes, with prolactinomas being the most prevalent (~50%), followed by somatotropinomas (~9-15%) and corticotropinomas (~4-8%). The analysis also includes clinically nonfunctioning adenomas, silent adenomas, and rare null-cell adenomas.
