Abstract: Migraine represents an important public health problem. Its prevalence is estimated at 15% of the population, and is more common in females. Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of migraine in a sample of the population of Maceió, describing its clinical and epidemiological characteristics. Methods: Cross-sectional study, through the application of a questionnaire to 630 inhabitants of Maceió, randomly contacted, selecting 75 individuals with criteria for migraine. Results: A prevalence of migraine was found to be 11.9%, with 19.3% observed in females and 2.9% in males. Furthermore, migraine was more prevalent among those who were illiterate (19.2%), among individuals with a per capita family income of less than one minimum wage (18.6%), between 18 and 29 years old (17.4%) and married people (16.4%). Stress was the triggering factor most reported by participants (85.3%). Conclusions: This study demonstrated a high prevalence of migraine, more frequent in women, among young adults and those with low socioeconomic status.
