Abstract: Population aging is a global phenomenon that has significant implications for contemporary society. As more individuals enter the elderly phase of life, issues related to care, well-being and quality of life gain prominence. This article will investigate the complex interaction between aging, family and Long-Term Institutions for the Elderly (LTCFs), examining the challenges and opportunities that arise in this dynamic. Through a multidimensional approach, we will explore the psychosocial, economic, and cultural factors that influence care choices for older adults and how these factors shape family relationships and LTCF utilization. Furthermore, we will analyze the different perspectives of elderly people, families and health professionals on the transition to LTCFs and its impacts on family dynamics. The study is an integrative review and the following descriptors will be used to select the articles: Aging, Family, Long-Term Institutions for the Elderly, Care, Quality of life, in the Virtual Health Library database The inclusion criteria will be: articles that address themes inherent to the proposed objectives, national publications; available in Portuguese; publication period of the last five years (2019 to 2023); qualitative, quantitative, qualitative-quantitative research, experience reports, reflective studies, manuals and books from the Ministry of Health. By considering these elements, this study will offer valuable insights for the formulation of public policies, care practices and support programs that promote healthy aging, better quality of life and harmonious coexistence between family and ILPIs. Therefore, understanding how these dimensions interact and influence each other is essential to create an environment conducive to dignified aging and adequate care for the elderly, addressing the complexities surrounding this phase of life.
