Abstract: The boundary between the Rio Doce River and the built physical infrastructure of the city of Colatina exhibits a supposed distancing of its citizens from the vast body of water – the river is part of the landscape, without any form of appropriation by the population. This detachment is directly related to the neglect of a natural element of monumental proportions that has suffered for decades from deforestation of its banks, sedimentation, and pollution of its waters, and which experienced an environmental collapse following the Samarco mining disaster in 2015. The current research project "Between River and City: A Look at the History of Colatina and the Decline of the Rio Doce" defines itself as a bibliographical and exploratory study aimed at emphasizing the urgent need for environmental care to restore the sense of ownership of the Rio Doce by the urban population of Colatina throughout its development. The results highlight the importance of considering environmental issues in urban management and urban planning.
