Abstract: This essay proposes an articulation between Niccolò Machiavelli’s political philosophy and the contemporary climate crisis, focusing on the challenges of governance, power, and responsibility in the face of a global environmental catastrophe. Drawing on the concepts of virtù, fortuna, and reason of state, the essay argues that a Machiavellian perspective can shed light on the dilemmas faced by political leaders amid ecological instability. Dialogues with thinkers such as Bruno Latour, Naomi Klein, Dipesh Chakrabarty, and Timothy Morton help broaden this reflection by shifting the climate crisis from a technical domain to a political-philosophical one. The climate crisis demands new ways of imagining power and action in the face of uncertainty, and Machiavelli’s realist tradition offers critical tools for that endeavor.
