Abstract: This paper is about the utopian thought present in the work of Joaquim Felício dos Santos, lawyer, teacher, journalist, member of parliament, jurisconsult from Minas Gerais who lived in the second half of the 19th century. His writings were initially published in O Jequitinhonha and were fundamental to republican propaganda in the 1860’s. Moreover, the republicanism disseminated in the Province of Minas Gerais by Joaquim Felício dos Santos contributed to desacralize the figure of the monarch and at the same time criticize the status quo of the empire. On the other hand, dos Santos proposed an ideal “future government”, which, according to his expectations, would be egalitarian and fair.
