Abstract:
Drawing on an ongoing research about news consumption among young people in Concepción, Chile, this article deals with the methodological challenges faced when examining the ways this age group accesses news content in a context of media convergence, mobility and hyperconnectivity. That context demands to rethink the methods we use for analyzing and gathering data, which allows for effectively capturing the complexity of intertwined factors that intervene on the configuration of young people’s informative diet and media constellation. A methodological proposal is presented, which corresponds to a sequential explicative design of mixed methods, whose innovation is based on the use of participative and mobile methods, specifically the focus group and time-space diary. As has been demonstrated, both methodological tools are well adapted to participants’ subjectivity and everyday life and, as a result, participants are allowed to describe, from their own personal experiences and natural settings, the fabric of relations and activities involved while consuming news.
