• Abstract: ABSTRACT: The portable ultrasound technique, made possible by miniaturization and other technological innovations added to ultrasound devices, developed for use in clinical medical practice, has been extended to several health professionals. It is now understood by professional nursing regulations as a valuable technological tool in supporting nurses in more complex care. Objective: to reflect on aspects related to bedside ultrasound based on a timeline of developments in science that led to the creation of the technique. Method: theoretical reflection essay, supported by a narrative literature review constructed from publications captured in the Google Scholar information resource for a doctoral dissertation defended in 2023. Results: the essay was didactically divided into topics. We started from the beginnings of acoustic physics to trace a chronological narrative line of the evolution of this technology, its adoption as a medical practice, the integration, through specific legislation, as a technological resource to support the complex care provided by nurses, also addressing important concepts and definitions for a basic understanding of this technological innovation. Conclusion: the synthesis presented in this article can provide understanding and appropriation of the topic of bedside ultrasound, which is still mostly unexplored in scientific literature. New studies are suggested to demonstrate results obtained with the use of the technique by nurses, in different care realities.
