Abstract: Population aging has placed older patients at the center of hospital care, particularly regarding the safe use of medications. This chapter presents the results of a study conducted with nurses from a public hospital in Minas Gerais, Brazil, aiming to analyze the relationship between the perception of the importance of geriatric pharmacotherapy and technical knowledge about potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs). The sample revealed a predominantly young and female profile, with limited professional experience, although highly exposed to the care of older adults. Most nurses recognized the relevance of medication assessment in this population, but many lacked structured knowledge of specific clinical tools such as the Beers and STOPP/START criteria. This gap between perception and evidence-based practice reflects one of the main challenges faced by nursing in hospital settings. Although no statistically significant association was found, the data suggest that nurses with greater technical knowledge tend to adopt safer practices, monitor adverse reactions, and value treatment adherence. The findings reinforce the importance of continuing education, systematic prescription review, and the strengthening of a safety culture as essential strategies to prevent adverse events and promote the quality of care for hospitalized older adults.
