Abstract: ABSTRACT: Patient safety is an essential dimension of nursing care quality. It is a duty of nurses and a goal of health organizations. The objective of this article is to analyze the scientific evidence about patient safety in hospitals - emergency services, in the opinion of nurses. This is a systematic review of the literature with three stages. 1) Initial search in the SCIELO PORTUGAL, SCIELO BRAZIL, PUBMED, LILACS and MEDLINE databases. 2) Broader search in the other databases of the EBSCOHost platform. 3) Research in the bibliographic references of the selected articles. The selected studies cover the period between 2014 and 2019, resulting in five articles. Adverse events in health institutions were identified in the surveys due to several contributing factors: Work overload, lack of patient safety culture in the institution, understaff, punitive culture in the institutions contributing to the non-notification of adverse events due to fear, insecurity due to punitive culture, and the nurses consider that the nursing practice environment, Teamwork and issues related to the leadership of nurse managers are key factors in improving the quality of care provided and patient safety. Encouraging teamwork improves patient care, reduces adverse events, and increases quality.
