Abstract: The hegemonic patriarchal system has rendered invisible women’s reproductive and productive labor while also restricting their participation in activities traditionally deemed masculine. This systemic barrier has hindered the transmission and representation of a cultural legacy that rightfully belongs to women, as exemplified by the agave-mezcal production chain. This study aimed to foster the empowerment of women mezcal producers and artisans of mezcal-based fruit liqueurs in Santiago Zoochila, Oaxaca, by creating spaces that promote recognition of their productive and reproductive labor. Employing a qualitative approach with quantitative elements and a feminist methodological framework, the research combined reality analysis (diagnostic assessment) with action-oriented proposals. To measure outcomes, a pre- and post-intervention survey was administered, based on two empowerment assessment tools comprising nine factors and 46 items. The study focused on seven women from the community who participated in seven empowerment workshops. Results indicated that the group’s collective empowerment level increased from 47.75% to 79%, shifting from a low to a high level of empowerment following the workshop intervention. The findings suggest that these women are undergoing a process of self-recognition regarding the significance of their labor in sustaining their families. However, broader societal and state intervention remains necessary to alleviate their double burdens and excessive workloads.
