Abstract: The metaverse is a new concept that combines several technologies through the Internet, such as virtual reality, holograms, avatars and augmented reality, among others. This combination of technologies can transform education through digital interaction, creating different sensations of physical presence in a virtual world, allowing new ways of learning and working collaboratively. This new technological combination offers new learning opportunities at the educational level, eliminating borders and distances. Students can access educational content and resources through a range of technological devices. Educators can offer innovative learning experiences with almost unlimited digital resources through the creation of virtual learning environments. In addition, a line of research has been initiated through a mixed and supportive methodology with literature review, on how the metaverse can increase the digital divide and socioeconomic and educational inequality in countries such as Costa Rica. The research highlights the importance of timely decision making by the government and the regulation of the metaverse in the country, promoting equal opportunities so that not only people with economic resources can access this type of education.
