Abstract: Inhabiting a city seems like a normal practice, yet it is not. Dwelling is one of the two substantive functions of human beings, along with speech (Doberti and Giordano, 2000), which, lacking its own theory, has been unable to explain citizens' potential preferences for locating their residence in one area or another of the city. We can consider these decisions to be part of the complexity involved in inhabiting a city, a phenomenon that is linked to urban complexity and is only just beginning to be studied and understood as the difficulty in accurately understanding and reproducing the dynamics of complex systems in cities (Fernández, 2022). To this end, we present a brief description of urban complexity, which we complement with a "theory of dwelling." Finally, we include two themes that we consider fundamental in this decision about where to live: cultural identity and public space. We believe this article should be considered a review article.
