Abstract: It is known that the brain-gut axis is composed of bidirectional communication pathways that use routes such as the parasympathetic nervous system, especially the vagus nerve, the circulatory system, the immune system and the neuroendocrine system. The two-way communication between the GI tract and the brain plays a crucial role in maintaining homeostasis and is regulated through neural processes in the enteric and central nervous system. The importance and influence that the enteric microbiota plays is discussed, both in this signaling pathway both with the CNS and with mental and neurodegenerative diseases, modulating immunological aspects and even broader pathways. This review compiles some of the important aspects related to this route.
