EFICÁCIA DAS ESCOVAS MANUAL E ELÉTRICA EM IDOSOS: ESTUDO CLÍNICO
O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficácia e a aceitação de escovas de dente convencional e elétrica em idosos independentes. Este estudo clínico randomizado, cruzado e cego foi realizado com 40 idosos. A amostra foi dividida em dois grupos: GA - utilizou primeiramente a escova de dentes elétrica (EE) e, em seguida, a convencional (EC); e GB- primeiro usou a EC e depois a EE. Os resultados do índice de biofilme (Índice Simplificado de Higiene Bucal) na 1ª fase para GA com EE foram de 1,25 ± 0,77, 0,39 ± 0,37, 0,37 ± 0,31, 0,31 ± 0,27 e para GB com EC foram 1,32 ± 0,70, 0,64 ± 0,63, 0,51 ± 0,42, 0,49 ± 0,44 no 1º, 14º, 28º e 42º dias, respectivamente. Na 2ª fase o índice de biofilme para GA com CE foram 0,72 ± 0,44, 0,36 ± 0,30, 0,48 ± 0,47, 0,50 ± 0,48, e para GB com EE foram: 0,73 ± 0,52, 0,47 ± 0,39, 0,41 ± 0,46, 0,53 ± 0,36 no 70º, 84, 98 e 112 dias, respectivamente. A escova elétrica agradou 69,2% dos idosos. Concluiu-se que ambas as escovas dentais foram eficazes na remoção do biofilme, porém não houve diferença entre as escovas de dente convencional e elétrica.

Abstract:
The objective was to evaluate the efficacy and acceptance of manual and electric toothbrushes in independent elderly. This randomized, crossover and blind clinical study was performed with 40 elderly. The sample was divided into two groups: GA- first used the Powered Toothbrush (PT) and then the Manual Toothbrush (MT); and GB- first used the MT and then the PT. The results regarding the biofilm index using the Simplified Oral Hygiene Index in the 1st phase for GA with PT were 1.25 ± 0.77, 0.39 ± 0.37, 0.37 ± 0.31, 0.31 ± 0.27, and for GB with MT were 1.32 ± 0.70, 0.64 ± 0.63, 0.51 ± 0.42, 0.49 ± 0.44 in the 1st, 14th, 28th, 42th days respectively. In the 2nd phase for GA with MT were 0.72 ± 0.44, 0.36 ± 0.30, 0.48 ± 0.47, 0.50 ± 0.48, and for GB with PT were: 0.73 ± 0.52, 0.47 ± 0.39, 0.41 ± 0.46, 0.53 ± 0.36 in the 70th, 84th, 98th and 112th days respectively. The powered toothbrush pleased 69.2% of the elderly. It was concluded that both toothbrushes were effective in biofilm removal, but there was no difference between manual and powered toothbrushes.
