Abstract: Introduction: Smoking is considered a chronic disease characterized by nicotine dependence. Tobacco use is a factor related to mortality, which can, however, be reversible. Passive smoking is the inhalation of cigarette smoke components by people who live with smokers in enclosed spaces. Objective: To highlight and clarify 2 2 the effects of passive smoking on lung health. Methodology: This is a literature review whose studies were selected from the PubMed database, using the Portuguese language descriptors tabagismo, poluição por fumaça de tabaco, fumar, as well as their English counterparts: tobacco, tobacco smoke pollution, and smoking. Inclusion criteria were articles published between 2013 and 2023 (10 years), in Portuguese and English languages, and having correlation with the proposed theme. The selection resulted in 22 articles. Results and discussion: The studies indicate that non-smokers inhale the same toxic substances as smokers and therefore may also develop respiratory problems, which can cause serious health damage. This situation is present in various population groups: men, women, young people, adolescents, pregnant women, and children, with the latter two being the most susceptible. Conclusion: In light of the above, it is essential for smokers to be aware that this habit can cause various diseases in the people they live with and that measures should be taken to reduce smoking.
