Abstract: During the gestational period, the use of medicinal plants is common since the use of a large amount of drugs is prohibited. However, some plant species have important harmful effects on embryonic development. In this review, data regarding the medicinal plants used and their negative effects during pregnancy were collected. A search for articles was carried out in the Pubmed and Google Scholar databases, the abstracts were read, excluding studies that did not fit with the proposal of this review. It was observed that medicinal plants have beneficial effects in the treatment of diseases, however, some constituents of them harm embryonic development, exposing the embryo/fetus to abortion, embryotoxicity and teratogenic risk. Thus, some medicinal plants cause damage to pregnancy, so their consumption must be carried out under observation in order to avoid the damage associated with their use, also requiring educational measures to alert the mother about these risks.
