Abstract: The higher education context with COVID 19 pandemic, has undoubtedly affected teaching process to levels never seen before in modern era, so it is necessary to face with solid bases the possible academic deficiencies and school dropouts, because of factors derived from a forced academic improvisation continue teaching virtually or mixed classes. So, based on the above, the subject of introduction to programming was selected to develop a comprehensive study that provides sufficient information to find alternative solutions to improve teaching and prevent dropouts on Electromechanical Engineering first semester career in pandemic times. The method that was approached are practices with project of the subject, where students are first asked to develop a practical programming model and ends with the implementation of the same during the class, both virtual and face to face. Through implementation of this methodology and creation of strategies, the academic performance of students on first semester improved, which is reflected in the indicators of school achievement, and, consequently, the dropout rate at Instituto Tecnologico de Linares decreased.
