Abstract: Popular Education in Health in Brazil undergoes a series of transformations, from its emergence in the 1920s to the present day. This article intends to analyze this trajectory, based on a bibliographic review, reflecting on the forms of control present in the notion of Health Education, as well as the possibilities of an emancipatory perspective, guaranteeing the role of the population served. It is also intended to combine the analysis of Popular Education in Health with the pedagogical dimension of Social Work, based on the notion that the professional category, historically inserted in Health policy and considering the Ethical Political Professional project, has the potential to contribute to advances with regard to an effectively emancipating popular health education within the scope of the Unified Health System.
