Abstract: This study presents the development of an educational action that sought to stimulate the autonomy and protagonism of knowledge in the subject of learning by encouraging innovative education. Seeking to involve the student as an active subject of pedagogical practice, as a protagonist of their teaching and learning process, a proposal was developed with students from the 2nd year/2023 of high school at the Polytechnic College of UFSM, whose theme was the historical cultural heritage of Santa Maria/RS. The aim was to raise awareness among teenagers about heritage education, as well as to study and create a folder, a tourism Padlet and a video inviting people to get to know the heritage of Santa Maria. Initially, articles, media and bibliographical information on the history of art, architecture, dates and curiosities of the city were made available to students. The classes were held in different spaces in the city, with technical visits to historic buildings and museums, spaces few know about. To choose the location to be researched and collect data, each group was invited to photograph, interview the community and film the spaces they considered important to be publicized as tourist attractions to visit. The proposal is still in progress. The materials created in Portuguese will be worked on by the English teacher, translating them for later printing and dissemination. It was possible to recognize and (make) known spaces in the city, in addition to raising awareness among those involved about the importance of preserving our historical and cultural heritage in the city. Likewise, with this teaching process, the student becomes familiar with the different stages of doing science. We also believe that, so, we are contributing, through practical action, to education and awareness of the importance of local, regional, national and global historical heritage.
