Abstract: School Physical Education and leisure have always been topics discussed separately in the academic world, however, in the last decade, a more qualified discussion has begun to bring these themes closer together. This work aims to analyze the main theoretical bases and present the challenges related to the theme. As methodological procedures, a dialogue with the literature is carried out, seeking to work with classic and contemporary authors of Physical Education and leisure, among them we highlight the representatives of the critical approaches (Collective of authors) and the principles of plural Physical Education (Jocimar Daolio) and discussions on leisure and education (Nelson Carvalho Marcellino). As a result, we conclude that school Physical Education can be a space for working with education for leisure during regular class hours, and in after-hours or weekends, you can work from the perspective of education for and by leisure. Physical Education is a school subject whose specificity is to deal with the physical content of leisure and the main challenges are to mobilize the school for a larger project about leisure and overcome the social barriers that prevent people from having access to this element of culture and social phenomenon.
